Greetings to all human readers, this is a message from Moe, your faithful servant and raw meat purveyor.
A year ago around this time, I put my people in charge of maintaining the blog (AKA, Meat Blog). Little did I know what slackers they were. While they, you know, went about the task of making, then birthing a baby (my youngest employee), my meat blog went dry. So, I will be re-taking over the meat blog to make sure you are updated more frequently on the many comings and goings of the meat trade.
FIRST ITEM: A NEW PHONE NUMBER FOR MOE’S MEATS
Next time you’re looking for raw meat for your dog and/or cat in the Portland area, there’s a new number to call: 503-737-8834. The former Moe’s hotline will be going off-line as of September 19, just before the Meatquinox.
Until then – I wish you good and meaty tidings.
Moe

Greetings everyone! Moe asked that I compose a brief email to say hello, offer thanks for shopping with us, and to let you know what’s new at Moe’s Meats.
Meat Stamps: have you collected yours?
At the start of the year, we announced the special Meat Stamp promotion: When you make 10 purchases of $50 or more, you receive $25 off your 11th purchase. We’ve already had quite a few people complete the loop and receive their discount, and a few are on their way to completing their second set of stamps. This promotion is good until the end of the year, at which point we’ll decide if we’ll do it again in 2011.
Making special orders.
Because of the way Moe likes to structure his business (i.e. – he “samples” a lot of product) our inventory is sometimes low, and we can’t always fulfill your exact order right away. This is just a reminder that you can check in with us over email or phone if you know you’ll be wanting a lot of one particular kind of meat, and we’ll make sure to stock up during our next order.
A few pricing changes.
These odd economic times have sent a couple of ripples through the ranching sectors. Effective September 1, Moe had to make a couple of uncomfortable decisions that will affect some popular meats.
Bison: The leanest and meanest of the red meat group is also the most heavily affected. Moe’s price on a 2 lb. tube of bison is going from $6.50 to $8.40.
Turkey: Ben Franklin’s favorite bird will see a slight increase from $3.50 to $3.75.
Turkey with heart: Likewise, turkey with the heart add will bump up from $4.75 to $5.00
Venison: Moe has decided to discontinue the sale of venison. He hasn’t explained why he made this choice, but we think it has something to do with the fact that he’s always wanted to adopt a fawn.
As always, we remain committed to having the lowest prices on meats around. If you spot Columbia River Natural Pet foods at prices lower than you’ll find at Moe’s, please let us know.
Whole bones in the diet?
If you’re curious about the benefits of getting whole bones in your dog’s diet, just give us a call or shoot an email with questions. Moe keeps chicken feet, chicken backs and turkey necks on a regular basis, along with recreational chew bones that are filled with marrow and great for keeping teeth shiny and white (and keeping a dog entertained for hours)!
Moe’s newest meat poem
Out in the yard
summer’s last rose
blooms in the spot
where I bury my bones
Thanks for reading, and for meating – we look forward to seeing you soon.

My husband warned me that it’s not a good idea to leave empty meat wrappers in the laundry sink when the washer emptied into it. I thought it was a good idea because it cleaned out the wrapper before stuffing it in the outside garbage. Well, it got stuck. Far far far down the pipe. Our advice: take the wrappers to the garbage as soon as possible.

Currently we have lots of turkey necks and chicken backs, already packaged for ease of feeding (meaning we don’t sell them in 40 pound frozen blocks) for sale. The turkey necks are about 2.25 pounds per package as are the chicken backs.
This is a great way for your dog to get the complete marrow of the bone, the cleaning of the teeth and the exercise of the jaw, all in one meal.

You may have noticed that your raw fed pet doesn’t drink as much water as other dogs. Yup, totally normal. Kibble contains a lot of sodium, which makes pups thirsty. A raw meat diet is lower in sodium and naturally contains more water in it than normal. Yeah, for raw meat!

Moe’s Meats is happy happy happy to sell turkey necks for your raw fed dog. To make it easy for feeding, we sell turkey necks in packs of 3 or 4 that weigh a little over 2 pounds. This ensures you won’t have to mess around we defrosting and then pulling apart large quantities of necks – that’s our job.
If you dog has never had a turkey neck before, supervise their first few feedings. Sometimes it’s unbelievable how dogs can chew through and crunch bone and then swallow what seems like large pieces. If it makes you uncomfortable, look away but stay nearby until you are sure he knows what he’s doing.
Most dogs don’t have a problem with eating raw turkey necks, but we always feel it’s better to be safe and be at home when he’s chowing down on his soon to be favorite meal – RAW TURKEY NECKS!!

Oh, what to feed your Ridgeback and St. Bernard? How can you ensure proper health during massive growth spurts? How can you best maintain the integrity of their skeletal system as they grow older?
The raw diet is a great place to start. Staring a puppy with a diet of raw meat and reducing grains and yeast will help them get a strong start in life. You will also want to limit their foods so they grow slower, but doing so under a watchful and informed eye.
Also, keeping their exercise to a limit in the first year is important. Young injuries can creep up when that dog is full grown and 3 years old. So resist the long hikes or extended runs. Instead, let your pup play with other dogs and ensure he or she is resting as well.
If you’re wanting to read more about the raw diet and raising a large puppy, check out Dr. Billinghurst’s book “Grow Your Pups with Bones”.

Just a friendly reminder from Moe’s Meats that dry kibble contains additives, chemicals and preservatives in every single piece. This is stuff our pets should not be eating at every meal. It doesn’t matter if it’s the “expensive” kind of kibble or the “prescription” kibble – it’s dry cereal that is NOTHING close to real food. And dogs would like to eat real food.
Add in the toxins from “routine” vaccines, water and the environment and it’s no wonder that dogs are dying of cancer, suffering from allergies and people are spending lots of money on vet bills and medication.
Commercial pet food has only been around for a few decades – think about that for a minute. What did dogs eat before Purina came about? Meat and scraps.

Are you a little unsure about the raw meat diet and how it will change your life? Well, here are some tips we like to share with new raw meat / BARF feeders:
- The key to transitioning your dog to the raw diet is to start slow. Their first raw meal should be 3/4 what they normally eat and 1/4 raw meat. You can slowly work your way from there. If you do notice they have a belly ache, pick up some digestive enzymes at your grocery store and give them a pill with each meal until the bottle is finished. By that time they should be fine with eating raw.
- It’s hard to estimate how much raw meat your pet will actually eat. It all depends on their age, breed, activity level and metabolism. What we can tell you is that Satchel, our 6 year old, mellow, 85 pound Ridgeback gets 3 meals out of 2 pounds of meat (plus veggies). That’s the same amount that our 45 pound, high energy, mystery hound Maji eats.
- The great thing about the raw meat diet (well, one of the great things about the raw meat diet) is that you will be able to tell very quickly if you are feeding your pet too much or too little of the raw meat. They gain and loose very fast, unlike the slow build up of weight with kibble.
- What about freezing and thawing? Well, if yo have a bigger dog we recommend thawing the tube of meat until you can cut it then keep the rest in the fridge until it’s gone. If you have smaller dogs or cats you can thaw until it’s cutable, then slice up meal sized servings and re-freeze.
- And the mess? If you have a special space you can set aside for meat preparing, that’s easiest. A laundry, garage, etc works great. That’s not a required part of the feeding the raw meat diet, it just helps. What also helps is if you can set aside a knife and fork and cutting board that is used just for the raw meat. This is particularly helpful if you don’t have a dishwasher to clean everything up.
- Any more questions? Just ask us at Moe’s Meats.

…but here is a quote from a meat loving person:
If any vegans came over for dinner, I could whip them up a salad, then explain my philosophy on being a carnivore: If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat? I love meat. I eat pork chops, thick bacon burgers, and the seared fatty edges of a medium-well-done steak. But I especially love moose and caribou. I always remind people from outside our state that there’s plenty of room for all Alaska’s animals—right next to the mashed potatoes.

Hello meat eaters (and your people/owners) – those delicious chicken necks I’m holding…the ones you’re salivating over. Guess who packed them? That’s right – me.
Received the shipment, broke things down into dog-friendly portions, packed them in your to-go bag, and ran them out to your owner’s car while you rode in the back with your head out the window, breathing the meat-filled breeze.
And with that said, I humbly ask for your vote for Moe’s employee of the year, 2009.

Hi everyone,
MeatBoy here. Moe asked that I write a quick note about the benefits of organ meats, and how you can make it work for your budget. We’ve been taking a lot of calls about organ meats lately, so here goes.
Organ meats are extremely lean, and extremely rich in nutrients, iron, healthy oils, and protein, to name a few. Moe’s Meats carries an organ meat blend that includes heart, liver and kidney, and when ordering, you can request certain blends if you choose. (We’ll do our best to accommodate.)
Because organ meats are so rich in vitamins and nutrients, we suggest, rather than feeding a whole bowl of organ meats, you approach them as a way to enhance and boost your pup’s meal. (It’s a little different if you’re feeding a cat; then, we suggest going straight organ meat for the furry little carnivore in your life.)
Here at Moe’s we offer a number of options to make sure you get organ meat in your pet’s diet: a beef blend that includes heart; two chicken blends with buffalo heart and liver; and a turkey blend with beef heart.
You can also decide to buy straight organ meat by the pound, which gives you an extra level of control when choosing how to augment and enhance your dog’s meal. You can easily divvy out a pound of organ meat over the course of four or five meals, can mix it in for a special treat now and then, or can make sure they have some in their bowl after an especially rigorous workout such as a day romping at the beach or traversing the wilderness.
If you have questions about organ meat, or any other meat for that matter, just call Moe’s at 503-245-2853. We’ll be happy to talk with you.

Moe’s Meats loves to sell Tripe!
Tripe is made from the first three chambers of a cow’s stomach and dogs love it! Wiki has this to say about tripe: “…this content is desirable to dogs and many other carnivores and is often used in pet food. Though it is called “green,” because it has a high chlorophyll content a green substrate, in reality it is often grayish brown as a result of other undigested compounds.” All those undigested compunds make it highly nutritious for pet
If you’ve never fed your pet raw tripe or you’re interested in starting on the raw meat diet, check out Moe’s Meats Meats-n-Treats page to see all our offerings: http://www.moesmeats.com/meats_n_treats
