Commercial Pet Foods

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Just a friendly reminder from Moe’s Meats that dry kibble contains additives, chemicals and preservatives in every single piece. This is stuff our pets should not be eating at every meal. It doesn’t matter if it’s the “expensive” kind of kibble or the “prescription” kibble – it’s dry cereal that is NOTHING close to real food. And dogs would like to eat real food.

Add in the toxins from “routine” vaccines, water and the environment and it’s no wonder that dogs are dying of cancer, suffering from allergies and people are spending lots of money on vet bills and medication.

Commercial pet food has only been around for a few decades – think about that for a minute. What did dogs eat before Purina came about? Meat and scraps.

Have Questions About the Raw Meat Diet for Your Dog and Cat?

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

images Are you a little unsure about the raw meat diet and how it will change your life? Well, here are some tips we like to share with new raw meat / BARF feeders:

  • The key to transitioning your dog to the raw diet is to start slow. Their first raw meal should be 3/4 what they normally eat and 1/4 raw meat. You can slowly work your way from there. If you do notice they have a belly ache, pick up some digestive enzymes at your grocery store and give them a pill with each meal until the bottle is finished. By that time they should be fine with eating raw.
  • It’s hard to estimate how much raw meat your pet will actually eat. It all depends on their age, breed, activity level and metabolism. What we can tell you is that Satchel, our 6 year old, mellow, 85 pound Ridgeback gets 3 meals out of 2 pounds of meat (plus veggies). That’s the same amount that our 45 pound, high energy, mystery hound Maji eats.
  • The great thing about the raw meat diet (well, one of the great things about the raw meat diet) is that you will be able to tell very quickly if you are feeding your pet too much or too little of the raw meat. They gain and loose very fast, unlike the slow build up of weight with kibble.
  • What about freezing and thawing? Well, if yo have a bigger dog we recommend thawing the tube of meat until you can cut it then keep the rest in the fridge until it’s gone. If you have smaller dogs or cats you can thaw until it’s cutable, then slice up meal sized servings and re-freeze.
  • And the mess? If you have a special space you can set aside for meat preparing, that’s easiest. A laundry, garage, etc works great. That’s not a required part of the feeding the raw meat diet, it just helps. What also helps is if you can set aside a knife and fork and cutting board that is used just for the raw meat. This is particularly helpful if you don’t have a dishwasher to clean everything up.
  • Any more questions? Just ask us at Moe’s Meats.

Monday, September 21st, 2009

meatboy

Hello meat eaters (and your people/owners) – those delicious chicken necks I’m holding…the ones you’re salivating over. Guess who packed them? That’s right – me.

Received the shipment, broke things down into dog-friendly portions, packed them in your to-go bag, and ran them out to your owner’s car while you rode in the back with your head out the window, breathing the meat-filled breeze.

And with that said, I humbly ask for your vote for Moe’s employee of the year, 2009.

The deal with organ meats

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Hi everyone,

MeatBoy here. Moe asked that I write a quick note about the benefits of organ meats, and how you can make it work for your budget. We’ve been taking a lot of calls about organ meats lately, so here goes.

Organ meats are extremely lean, and extremely rich in nutrients, iron, healthy oils, and protein, to name a few. Moe’s Meats carries an organ meat blend that includes heart, liver and kidney, and when ordering, you can request certain blends if you choose. (We’ll do our best to accommodate.)

Because organ meats are so rich in vitamins and nutrients, we suggest, rather than feeding a whole bowl of organ meats, you approach them as a way to enhance and boost your pup’s meal. (It’s a little different if you’re feeding a cat; then, we suggest going straight organ meat for the furry little carnivore in your life.)

Here at Moe’s we offer a number of options to make sure you get organ meat in your pet’s diet: a beef blend that includes heart; two chicken blends with buffalo heart and liver; and a turkey blend with beef heart.

You can also decide to buy straight organ meat by the pound, which gives you an extra level of control when choosing how to augment and enhance your dog’s meal. You can easily divvy out a pound of organ meat over the course of four or five meals, can mix it in for a special treat now and then, or can make sure they have some in their bowl after an especially rigorous workout such as a day romping at the beach or traversing the wilderness.

If you have questions about organ meat, or any other meat for that matter, just call Moe’s at 503-245-2853. We’ll be happy to talk with you.

Freezer Bash

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Every year Moe’s Meats takes their inventory low and does a deep clean on all their freezers (we have 3). This is Satchel (aka Moe) doing his part.

TRIPE! TRIPE! TRIPE!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Moe’s Meats loves to sell Tripe!

Tripe is made from the first three chambers of a cow’s stomach and dogs love it! Wiki has this to say about tripe: “…this content is desirable to dogs and many other carnivores and is often used in pet food. Though it is called “green,” because it has a high chlorophyll content a green substrate, in reality it is often grayish brown as a result of other undigested compounds.” All those undigested compunds make it highly nutritious for pet

If you’ve never fed your pet raw tripe or you’re interested in starting on the raw meat diet, check out Moe’s Meats Meats-n-Treats page to see all our offerings: http://www.moesmeats.com/meats_n_treats

Mmmmm Tripe!

Introducing my new networking group

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

people and dog owners,

this is moe, owner and operator of Moe’s Meats, LLC – Portland’s finest distributer of raw meat for dogs and cats. listen:

last Friday, I, moe, tried going to what is commonly called a “networking” group. kind of like a dog park for people, you know?

anyway, get a load of this: they, the people, would not let me join? at first, you know, I thought it was because I wasn’t, you know, wearing pants. but NO!

they, the people, wouldn’t let me join because I, moe, was a dog. could you believe that?

after I peed on a nearby plastic plant (not to mention the “surprise” I left near the stairwell), I, moe, decided to start my OWN networking group.

and that group’s name is MEAT: Moe’s Entrepreneurial Action Team.

now – being an equal opportunity business owner and dog, I, moe, would like to invite you, a person, to join MEAT. all you have to do is, like, tell me what would be a good business referral for you, while at the same time, like, you know, help me get business too.

it’s a good model.

once a week (starting this week), I, moe, will post what will be a good referral. you, person, can leave a comment telling me how I can help you.

Turkey Necks for Dogs

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Yes! Yes! Yes! We love turkey necks! Moe’s Meats will be carrying turkey necks all summer, as long as he is able to keep them in stock (they are difficult to come by in the Portland area). Turkey necks are a great way to naturally clean a dog’s teeth while providing them with great nutrition.

The turkey necks also provide great varity to your loved ones diet and most dogs really enjoy noshing on them.

Give Moe’s Meats turkey necks a try and see what your dog thinks.

Rec Bone Season

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Satchel gnawing on a rec bone

Satchel gnawing on a rec bone

What better time of the year to be outside for hours and enjoy some raw meat right off the bone? I always tell customers that rec bones are like TV for dogs. Need to clean the house or run to the store without walking your puppy? Throw them a rec bone and watch them be content for hours.

The chewing action releases relaxing hormones and the outside air tires them out. After working down a bone, they pup will usually come inside, gulp water, then pass out for the next few hours.

And it’s totally safe to leave half chewed bones outside until the next time puppy is ready to eat on them. Satchel calls this “letting the bones season” and our grass is pretty much a bone yard. We’ll toss the bones every now and then, but really they don’t bother us and they never make our dogs sick. Occasionally, the flies get annoying and in the very hottest part of the day it smells like raw meat, but both those issues only last for a short window of time.

So check out Moe’s selection of raw, meaty bones. They come in small, medium and large. Medium usually being bigger than a man’s palm and large can mean as big as your arm. Moe tries to keep the smaller medium size always in stock in the summer. For his smaller customers, the lamb bone tray is a great option as well.

Finding a Vet that Supports the Raw Meat Diet

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Similar to allopathic doctors, most vets aren’t taught about natural nutrition during their schooling. Usually what happens is a representative from a major dog food label attends one class and talks about balanced nutrition and how their dog food can help with X diseases.

If you find a vet that is a naturopath that has studied acupuncture, herbs and the like, than you have most likely found yourself a vet that has done the research on the raw meat diet.

Portland, Oregon has some great natural pet healers. Moe prefers to visit Hawthorne Vet Clinic in the SE. There he can receive all sorts of lovely healing modalities, as well as sound advice. Check them out the next time your pet needs some natural healing, or just a check up.

Raw Meat and Bacteria

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

It’s natural to be worried about gross meat germs when feeding the raw meat diet. Will my dog or cat get sick? Will I get sick? Will my kitchen be totally filled with bacteria from all the raw meat.

If you have the space, I suggest preparing the meat in a separate place from where you prepare your own food. Perhaps a laundry room, garage or kosher kitchen. I like to wear dishing gloves when I make my own pet food. In fact, I don’t even touch human raw meat – generally I ask Dave to do it.

All meat, regardless of organic status, contains bacteria. Moe’s Meats sells human grade meat, which means it’s as good as what you can buy in the grocery store. Luckily, dogs and cats have a digestive system that is teeming with wonderful enzymes and probiotics that break down the harmful bacteria in the raw meat and allow it to digest without trouble.

It is rare that a pet fed on the raw meat diet will have parasites or bacteria problems. On the raw meat their system is primed to handle all the nasties usually found in raw meat.

Looking for a Meat Grinder

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Some Moe’s Meats customers like to buy whole bones from us and grind up their own fresh meat. What kind of meat grinder does Moe recommend?

The Maverick Grinder is  top quality grinder that will do the job perfectly. We’ve heard from many folks that they have been using this type of machine to grind up raw chicken backs, turkey necks, and wings for their dogs and cats.

Raw Meat Allergies

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Worried that your dog or cat is allergic to something in their raw meat diet? The best approach is to feed them one type of meat for a short time. That means no supplements or cookies or veggies. After a few days begin to add a second variety of meat back into the diet. Continue with the two meats and see what happens.

Watch for an allergic reaction each time you add something new to their diet. It may even be helpful to keep a food log of what meats, cookies (and their ingredients) and supplements you are introducing back into their diet.

If you can’t figure out what is making your dog or cat allergic – start to look at your environment. Dust? Material? Shampoo? Fleas? Vaccination? It may not always be their diet.

Good luck!

Food to Avoid When Feeding Raw Meat

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

People often ask what foods should their pet stay away from. Below is a solid list pulled from Moe’s FAQ section title About Meat.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains  theobromine, a cardiac stimulant that can cause  dogs to become hyperactive, thirsty, and suffer an irregular or increased heart rate.

Raisins and grapes

Though it’s fun to watch your dog catch grapes or raisins in their mouth, use popcorn instead. Both raisins and grapes can cause liver failure in dogs.

Onions

Raw, cooked, dried – it’s all bad. Onions contain thiosulphate, which causes red blood cells to explode.

Cobs of corn

Choking hazard that is worth mentioning.

Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts can cause tremor, weakness, and paralysis.

Fruit seeds

Pear seeds, apple seeds, peach, plum, apricot pits all contain trace amounts of cyanide. Rarely harmful, but important enough to be aware of.

Caffeine

Caffeine can cause hyperactivity, tremors, or seizures.  That means no soda, coffee or non-herbal tea.

Alcohol, Tobacco and street drugs

That’s just not cool.

Yeast dough/bread dough

Dough continues to rise in your pet’s stomach and can make them uncomfortable.

Q & A with Moe

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Moe asked me (MeatBoy) to start doing something around here, and I proposed an ongoing Q & A of sorts. He was all for it, and so I invite you to enjoy our first installment of “Q & A with Moe”

MB: Moe, tell me, why raw meat?

Moe: Are you really asking me that question. Haven’t you ever heard of letting a sleeping dog lie?

MB: Is that a trick answer?

Moe: No, idiot. I’m sleeping. Shhh. Is that thing on?

MB: What thing?

Moe: Your handheld digital recorder.

MB: No.

Moe: OK, then you’re an idiot.

MB: You said that already.

Moe: Said what?

MB: The part about me being an idiot.

Moe: Can I help you with anything else?

MB: I think we’re good for now.

Moe: Good. Could you bring my blanket? Oh, and the world needs raw meat.

MB: What’s that.

Moe: The answer to your first question.

MB: About me being an idiot?

Moe: No, about why raw meat for dogs and cats. Because the world needs it. And they need it for less money. And Moe, as you know, is loaded because of my trust fund. So I can, you know, afford to be generous.

MB: Thanks Moe.

Moe: My blanket…

Buffalo (aka Bison) is one of the healthiest meats you can feed your pet. It has a lower fat content than chicken and 25% more protein than beef. Not to mention Bison has 69% more Iron than beef. Because of it’s low fat and high protein content it makes it really easy for dogs and cats with allergies or stomach issues to digest.

Raw Chicken Feet – Great for Dogs

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Ahhh – Here at Moe’s Meats we love CHICKEN FEET! Though they can be gross looking, chicken feet are an amazing source of nutrients for your dog. As long as the chicken feet are raw and never ever cooked, they make a wonderful meal.

If your dog is young and you are worried he might swallow the chicken feet whole, you can always hold the chicken feet for your pup so he can eat the foot in stages.

Pulled from an August post, here are some chicken feet feeding tips:

1. Don’t look closely at the feet
2. Don’t listen to the sounds of scratching nails as you dump the package into the bowl
3. Don’t watch your pup eat the feet because inevitably your dog will look up at you with a foot hanging out of it’s mouth
4. No, you don’t need to clip the nails before feeding
5. Yes, they are considered a full meal
6. No, it won’t hurt coming out the other end

Homemade Natural Pet Food

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Interested in starting the year off right for your dog or cat? Begin by trying out raw, natural pet food to increase their immunity and health.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to many that feeding your pet a dry, manufactured cereal that resembles mulch is about as nutritious for them as feeding yourself french fries every night for dinner. Yes, both species can survive on tat diet, but it’s not the most sustaining and holistic approach to health.

For more information on how to get started, contact Moe’s Meats at 503.245.2853. We offer free group and private instruction classes on making your own homemade, natural, raw and wholesome pet food.

Feed Raw For Your Pet’s Health

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Domesticated dogs and cats have the same digestive tract that their wild ancestors have. With the exception of natural dangers from natural predators and catastrophes, dogs and cats in the wild rarely have degenerative diseases and live for a long-time based on their species.

The diet of your dog and cat is just as important to longevity and health as your diet is. To reduce the risk of cancers and other old-age diseases, a diet rich in

According to an article written by Shirley Lipschutz-Robinson, “Dr. Francis Pottenger of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm tried an experiment on several hundred cats. He divided them into two groups and fed one group their natural diet of raw meat and the other group a man-made diet of cooked pet food. He carried on this experiment through three generations. The cats that were fed their normal uncooked diet thrived. The cats that were fed a cooked diet developed the same diseases, and required the same medical treatment, as we humans. (excerpt from an article at the NewVeg site)”

Because pet food have their nutrients supplemented and made into unabsorbable products is what leads to toxin build up and then disease. It’s the exact same process that happens in humans when fed a diet of fast food. Yes, our bodies are amazingly adaptable to handle nutrient depleted food, but eventually it catches up to us. And the same goes for our pets.

To ensure holistic health and immunity for your dog and cat, feed them a raw natural diet. If you would like more information about where to begin, give Moe’s Meats a call at 503.245.2853
