Raw Meat for Dogs and Cats in Portland, Oregon

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Ahh, the BARF diet by Dr. Ian Billinghurst – that is what started the raw meat movement for pet owners. It began as a backlash to the processed pet food industry and as a solution to common health problems not found in pets until kibble took their bowls over.

With the raw meat diet you know exactly what is going into your pets bowl so you can feel comfortable filling your bowl with raw meat. The raw diet is what your pet naturally craves.

Feel free to contact us here at Moe’s Meats with any questions you have about the raw meat diet.

Human Point of View: Components of the Raw Meat Diet

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Satchel asked me to blog about what raw meaty bits are included in the raw meat diet. Before I list everything below, let me first shout out to Moe for lending today’s blog space – you’re the best Moe!!!

Raw Meaty Bones
Chicken, turkey, duck, and pork necks, chicken feet, chicken backs and wings, rabbit

Ground Raw Meat
Chicken, turkey, duck, bison, venison, and pretty much any animal that most Americans would eat. These always contain ground bone and you have the option to include organ meats (liver, kidney, heart, gizzard).

Crushed Veggies
All fruits and veggies onions, grapes, raisins, corn cobs…. Try to get organic whenever possible.

Rec Bones
Knuckle bones, knee bones and mysterious joints of animals. These are like TV for your dog.

Wholesome Table Scarps – in small quantity
Garlic, oatmeal, eggs with shell, rice, toast crusts, grains (great source of carbohydrates), non-yeast bread, couscous. And remember, organic is best – no nasty chemicals.

Human Point of View: Why I chose Raw Meat

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Hi. My name is Courtney and I work for Moe’s Meats. Satchel has handed over today’s blog so I can talk about my decision to feed raw meat.

I’ve raised dogs all my life feeding them kibble twice a day. I never thought anything of it until my own diet began to change. I started looking at the food I was eating and began incorporating organic, whole and raw foods into every meal.

When Dave and I were waiting for our new puppy to arrive we started researching diet. We couldn’t get over the thought of feeding Satchel something that is so overly processed, dry and the furthest thing from natural.

As I researched the subject I found lots of info supporting both sides. I talked to Satchel’s breeders (http://www.aegisridgebacks.com/home) who strongly encouraged the raw diet, especially since Satchel was being weened on raw meat.

Being a vegetarian, I was a little put off at the thought of handling raw meat and had no idea what to expect, but when I sat with myself I knew what to do. There was no way I was going to be able to feed my little puppy something I would never want fed to me. I just couldn’t live with myself now that I had this expanded understanding around the raw meat diet option.

Welcome to Moe’s Meats

hi. my name is satchel. aka Moe, founder and proprietor of Moe’s Meats (http://www.moesmeats.com/). as you can imagine, i am no ordinary dog. on the contrary, i’m Satchel, Rhodesian Ridgeback and card carrying member of the Ridgeback Mauraders, class of 2005. i assume you are, like, checking out my site, and, in so doing, you have, you know, found my blog. you are, like, a very fortunate human.

so, i started, you know, Moe’s Meats, as a way to get humans off the kibble. well, not humans, but to get humans to get their dogs off the kibble. kibble kills. haven’t you heard? cats too – they should eat on the raw, like, all the time. and even though, like, i don’t, you know, particularly like cats, i believe they deserve to eat well and fatten up.

beyond, you know, a recap of my wandering Ridgeback thoughts, i’ll also throw in some favorite recipes, tips, treats and links for, you know, your educational delight.
